In an exclusive interview this week with GQ, Young Thug, also known as Jeffrey Williams, made some interesting statements about his view on hip hop and age. Ironically the icon Jay-Z was mentioned, and not in the best way. One would think that younger emcees would refrain from making shady comments about the veterans, but that didn’t stop Young Thug. During the interview Young Thug was asked about rap being a young mans game and this was his response:

“If you’re 30, 40 years old, you’re not getting listened to by minors. Like, Jay-Z has some of the sickest lyrics ever, but I would never buy his CD, just because of my age and because of his age. By the time I turn that old, I ain’t gonna be doing what he’s doing.” (Quote taken from GQ)

Shade? I think so, but I do not think it was totally malicious. Insulting one of the best rappers of all time is Young Thugs only crime here. I doubt that Jay-Z is losing any sleep over the fact that Young Thug won’t be buying any of his CD’s. The Young Money rapper also revealed that he will drop the Young from his name one day. More importantly that he’ll be around for a long time, but doesn’t see himself rapping pass the age of 50. Usually one debates the role of women and sexism in hip hop or the effects of the explicit lyrics, but never ageism in the hip hop industry. Could serve to be a compelling topic.
