The untimely death of hip hop star ASAP Yams rocked the Hip Hop world this week. Yams was a member of the well-known Hip Hop collective from uptown New York, known as the ASAP Mob. Yams also known as Steven Rodriguez, was only twenty-six years old when he left us, the cause of death is still unclear. According to The Fader, Yams’ roommate found him unconscious and unresponsive on Sunday morning. Shortly after he was taken to Woodhill Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York where he was pronounced dead. In his past Yams had grappled with sleep-apnea and substance abuse, Codeine and Xanax to be specific, but Mob member A$AP Ant let the public know on VladTV that drugs played no role in his untimely death.

“I just want to clear it up for real, for real,” he said. “It ain’t no overdose. People stop saying overdose, ’cause that’s not what it is. It’s not an overdose. People keep talking about he overdosed off Xanax and sh-t like that or whatever and lean — no. That’s not what happened.”

Many in the hip hop community have paid their respects to mastermind including Wiz Khalifa, Drake, and Wale. Most notably Joey Fatts, one of Yams artists, who dropped a song this week called “Stevies World” honoring ASAP Yams legacy. While Yams was not the face of the ASAP Worldwide brand, he was the driving force behind it.

He founded ASAP WorldWide in 2008 with well-known rapper, ASAP Rocky. Yams wore many hats, but hip hop connoisseur was perhaps his greatest, He made it his job to be well versed in all things hip hop, his influence reaching into the music released by ASAP Mob members as well his numerous other artists. Yams was not into business of money, but to develop a brand that no one would question. He fostered his artists individual styles making sure one was not like the other. His influence in New York and Worldwide will never be forgotten as we take time to remember his legacy.
