We’re getting old out here folks…
NYC legendary radio personality Angie Martinez, announced her resignation from famed radio station Hot 97 on Wednesday. Martinez, who has been hailed as “The Voice of New York” broke the news via her Instagram account earlier that morning.
Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show ❤️ stay tuned…. Love, angie
The news comes as a shock to many New Yorkers who have listened to Angie’s voice for more than 20 years. Martinez came to Hot97 to work with Funk Master Flex and eventually hosted her own radio show, The Afternoon Drive. Known to be in the mix of everything, she is well known for her coverage of monumental hip hop news such as Biggie and Tupac’s death, East vs West Coast, and other various events.
Many have speculated where Martinez’s sudden departure stems from; with theorists stating that she might have been pushed out by the powers that be at Emmis Communications or she’s leaving for another station. Power 105 didn’t help quiet the rumors either, with their shady tweet sent out after her announcement was made.
